The Lüttichgau (also: Luihgau ) was a medieval Frankish Gaugrafschaft ; he was first mentioned in 779 as Pagus Leuhius . At the time, the Pagus Leuhius only included villages to the right of the Meuse , but not Liège itself, which lay to the left of the Meuse and on islands in the Meuse.

The renaming in Lüttichgau dates back to the 9th century and is due to a translation error due to ignorance of the original name.

In the 11th century the Lüttichgau stretched from the Meuse near Lüttich to just before Aachen .
