Richar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richar († 973 ) was Count of Hainaut from 963 and from 968 also owner of executive power in Lower Lorraine .

After the banishment of the rebellious Count Reginar III. von Hainaut in 957 and the death of Duke Gottfried I, who remained childless, in 964, both offices were occupied by Count Richar.

Presumably he is identical to Count Richar mentioned in a document dated June 2, 965. According to the document, this Count Richar and Brun caused Emperor Otto I to set up a foundation to commemorate the deceased Gottfried I. From this it can be concluded that Richar was a follower of Brun, in whose interests he ruled in the northern part of his duchy. Nevertheless, this identity remains doubtful, since such rulers usually bear the title dux , which for Richar otherwise cannot be proven.

It is possible that he is also identical with Richar von Aspel , Count in Lüttichgau , who, according to Hlawitschka (“The Beginnings of the House of Lothringen”), was a brother of Count Palatine Gottfried von Lothringen and thus an uncle of his predecessor (who presumably died at a young age) a brother of Brun's predecessor Wichfrid (approx. * 901, † 953). Richar von Aspel in turn was the father of Godizo von Aspel-Heimbach , Count in Hamaland and also in Lüttichgau.

After Richard's death, Emperor Otto I occupied the Duchy of Lower Lorraine in 978 with Karl , the younger son of the French King Ludwig IV and later pretender to the French throne.
