L'Orgue Mystique is a cycle of organ compositions by the composer Charles Tournemire ; it is considered his magnum opus . The work was written between 1927 and 1932. It contains 51 movements of organ compositions for the Sundays and feast days of the church year with the exception of Advent and Lent , when the organ is silent with the exception of the Sundays Gaudete and Laetare . The work is divided into three cycles based on the church year: Le Cycle de Noël , Op. 55 (Gaudete and Christmas time), Le Cycle de Pâques , Op 56 (Laetare and Easter time),Le Cycle après la Pentecôte , Op. 57 (the Sundays in the annual cycle after Pentecost / from Trinity).

The sequence of the five pieces is always the same:

  1. Prélude à l'introït (Prelude to the Introit )
  2. Offertoire ( Offertory )
  3. Elévation (during elevation )
  4. Communion (for giving communion )
  5. Pièce terminale (epilogue, postlude ).

The basis of every organ composition are the pieces of Gregorian chant planned for the respective day . In preparation for the composition, Tournemire paid several visits to the Abbey of Solesmes .
