L'Usteau du Loup

L'Usteau du Loup (also called Dolmen von Unsac, Allée couverte l'Usteau du Loup, La Cabane du Loup or La Grotte aux Fées - ( German  "Wolf's Cabin" ) or fairy grotto ) is the only gallery grave in the region . It is located northwest of the hamlet Unsac, southwest of Saint-Gervazy near Issoire in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The remains of this dolmen, which was perhaps the largest in the region, lie amidst an oak tree on a small granite rock, surrounded by high hills. The rectangular chamber is approximately 5.0 meters long and 3.0 meters wide. Three granite side plates on each side and one large and one small end stone form the three sides of the chamber, which opens to the east. The largest granite block is about 3.8 meters long, 2.7 meters wide and 70 centimeters thick with a weight of about 20 tons. There are no overlying capstones, but there are other large stones behind the chamber and nearby.
