L3enc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fraunhofer l3enc was the first publicly available MP3 encoder . The software can encode PCM files ( .wav ) into MP3 format. It was first published in July 1994. It was available as a command line tool for MS-DOS , Linux , Solaris , SunOS , NeXTStep, and IRIX . It was distributed as shareware and was limited to 112 kbit / s. A license for unrestricted use (use of bit rates up to 320 kbit / s) cost 350 German marks .

Since Fraunhofer WinPlay3 was released (September 9, 1995) , the first real-time MP3 playback software, it has been possible to save and play MP3 files on PCs. A 486DX2 / 66 processor would have been the minimum requirement for full playback quality (stereo) .

At the end of 1997 the further development of l3enc was stopped in favor of MP3enc, which is the successor to l3enc. It has often been called the "Best Quality MP3 Encoder". It was available for Microsoft Windows , Linux, Solaris, SunOS, IRIX, and Alpha . The advancement of MP3enc stopped late in 1998 in favor of a parallel branch that FhG had been developing for some time and that was called Fastenc. All of these programs are no longer actively marketed. On the Fraunhofer site one are now MP3 Surround coder and a MP3HD - Codec and software tools advertised.
