The diesel locomotive with pinion drive LAW D 21 of the free path empty Aurich-Witt mouth (LAW) was originally a biaxial diesel locomotive from the standard program A3M 420 F by KHD and was converted from the workshop of the LAW in a three-axle locomotive. The vehicle was in service from 1953 to 1967 and was scrapped in 1972.

history

The locomotive was delivered as a two-axle locomotive to the naval construction authority in Helgoland in 1941 and corresponded to a standard type from KHD for works railways , which was rarely built for meter gauge .

After LAW had acquired a locomotive of the same design as the D 23 delivered to the Wilhelmshaven naval shipyard in 1941 in 1951, it bought another locomotive in 1953 as a replacement for steam locomotives and designated it as the D 21.

Both locomotives were equipped with an air brake. The D 21 received a Daimler-Benz engine in 1953 , the D 23 only in 1956.

While the D 23 became a spare parts donor in 1959 after an engine failure, the D 21 was rebuilt again in 1960 in order to be able to transport jacked up standard gauge vehicles .

technical description

Original version

Originally the two-axle standard locomotives had a rod drive and mechanical power transmission. The jackshaft lay between the axles. The locomotive could be recognized as a Deutz locomotive by the round windows.

The drive system consisted of a three-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from KHD and a mechanical four-speed gearbox.

Conversion execution

The frame also had to be stiffened for equipping it with regular pulling and bumpers . The driver's cab was lengthened and widened for this. In order not to increase the permitted weight due to the overhang, a third axle was installed under the driver's cab, which at the same time reduced the axle load of the locomotive. The center axle was later weakened in the flange so that the locomotive could be used in shunting operations at train stations.

A new four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from Daimler-Benz with a higher output was installed as the machine system for the locomotive.

commitment

At first, the locomotive could only be used to a limited extent in general traffic due to its low speed and power. At the beginning, it was used for bathing traffic from Esens to Bensersiel and as a shunting locomotive in Esens.

After the rebuilding from 1962, the locomotive could no longer be used on the line. Attempts were made to sell the locomotive until 1966. After the wheel flange was weakened, it was only used as a shunting locomotive in Esens. After the entire line was closed, it was placed in the Aurich train station and scrapped in 1972.
