Company history

In 1871 Munich citizens founded the self-help organization “Christ Catholic Burial Association”, which was supposed to ensure a dignified burial for its members. The number of members rose to 140,000 by 1927; that year the facility was converted into a mutual insurance association . In addition to traditional funeral insurance, the association started life insurance in 1929. By 1933 the number of members rose to 400,000. As a result of the rulers of the Third Reich, the association had to rename itself in 1938 and henceforth operated as the “Munich Funeral Association”.

In July 1945, two months after the end of the Second World War , the association resumed business operations at Sendlinger Strasse 55 in Munich. In 1954, the association had a portfolio of 1.1 million insurance contracts.

The company contributed to the growing share of life insurance in 1969 when it was renamed “Lebensversicherung von 1871 a. G. Munich “invoice. In 1977 the former Regina-Palast-Hotel at Maximiliansplatz  5 became the new headquarters of the main administration as the Regina House . In 1987 the company chose a new appearance and a new logo (stylized women's towers ), which was intended to express the bond with the founding and hometown of Munich.

Shortly before the completion of the European single market , LV 1871 brought out new products in 1993, such as supplementary nursing pension insurance, independent occupational disability insurance with premium refund and dread disease policies with capital prepayment for serious illnesses.

In 1999 LV 1871 brought a product innovation onto the market with the "eXtra-Rente", which was awarded the Capital Innovation Prize for Insurance. In 2005, LV 1871 received this award again for the “PRIMUS 50plus” pension product with a second place. With the offer "Zmax - The LV 1871-Wahnzins-Account" the company entered the business field of investment products for the first time in 2006.

In January 2013, the trade magazines Euro and Euro am Sonntag awarded the Golden Bull award for the product 4flex. The independent jury of experts particularly praised the four options available at the start of retirement. Customers could choose between classic annuity or a lump-sum payment, as well as between an eXtra pension or care option. The pension was flexibly adjusted in the event of serious illness or need for care.
