occupation

The fruits of passion (French: Les Fruits de la Passion , Japanese: 上海 異 人 娼 館 / チ ャ イ ナ ・ ド ー ル Shanghai Ijin Shōkan / China Doll , in German, meaning “Foreign brothel in Shanghai / porcelain doll”) is a French-Japanese erotic film by the director Shūji Terayama from 1981. The coproduction is based on motifs from the sadomasochistic novel Geschichte der O (or its continuation Return to Roissy ) by Dominique Aury and tells the story of female submission . Klaus Kinski plays a leading role. The film relocates the plot to the Shanghai of the 1920s and partly uses the symbolic language of the template.

action

The young, submissive O is persuaded by her older friend Sir Stephen to work in a foreign brothel , the Maison des Fleurs in Shanghai , as proof of her love . She agrees and signs a contract. During her stay there, she makes herself available to strangers, while she is watched by Sir Stephen. Little by little the fate of the rest of the prostitutes is told; including a woman who wishes to be an actress and finally kills herself in a role-play . Also O s past with her father is implied, which eventually turns into a dream sequence in Sir Stephen.

Sir Stephen, meanwhile, runs a casino and has an affair with another French woman. Together they even force O to watch them have intercourse while she is handcuffed to a mirror. O then falls ill with a fever. A coolie , who can watch O from his apartment, falls in love with the stranger and joins a rebellion against the Europeans in order to raise the necessary money for a visit to the brothel. When he finally meets his dream woman, she returns his affection, which drives Sir Stephen insane with jealousy. At the end of the film, during a dance ball in the form of death personified , O is told that the coolie was murdered by Sir Stephen before he judged himself. She is now released from her contract and can go wherever she wants, but she can also stay.

«Do it libre. Tu peux aller où tu le désire. Mais si tu veux, tu peux rester, O. »

backgrounds

Klaus Kinski describes the shooting of the film in his autobiography I need love . The film was shot in the Shōchiku studio in Ofuna. The film, which in large parts was very surrealistic , was not a success with audiences and critics.

Like Ōshima's controversial film In the Realm of the Senses , The Fruits of Passion was produced in France by Argos Films . The reason for this was probably the bypassing of Japanese censorship , as sexual organs are not allowed to be shown and are therefore mostly blurred or pixelated in pornographic media in Japan .

Reviews

“'The Fruits of Passion' is worth seeing because it creates images of inexplicable beauty, fascinating style and surreal power. And not because the characters touch us. The strip fails as a drama, and as an orgy of images by one of the great symbolists of cinema it should be viewed as a success. "

- Midnight cinema

“The fate of the young woman, who tries to realize her love in the slavish submission to male sex fantasies, is again little more than a hook for tastefully staged nude scenes in the style of commercial soft porn - even if the Japanese avant-garde Shūji Terayama is for the direction is responsible. "

Stage version

In November 2012, a stage version by Project Nyx , in which Aquirax Uno , who often worked with Terayama and his troupe Tenjō Sajiki (stage design, poster designs, etc.), was performed in Tokyo in the Metropolitan Art Space . In July 2009, the play was previously performed by the Komaba Agora Theater . Only Japanese were involved in the performances, in contrast to the film, in which most of the main roles were played by non-Japanese.
