LW1 (Paralympics)

LW1 is a starting class for athletes in the Paralympic winter sport of alpine skiing . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:

Skiers of Class LW1 disabilities have both lower extremities. One of the following minimum criteria must be met:

  • Loss of both lower extremities at knee joint level or above - or
  • significant loss of strength in both lower extremities.

The following applies:

  • the athlete uses prostheses and two skis and two sticks.

The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . Athletes in classes LW1-LW9 start standing. Athletes in classes LW1-LW4 (leg handicap) can be reclassified to seat class LW12.
