LW4 (Paralympics)
LW4 is a starting class for athletes in Paralympic winter sports for athletes in Alpine skiing , Nordic skiing and biathlon . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:
LW4 skiers have disabilities in one leg below the knee joint. One of the following minimum criteria must be met:
- Loss of the lower extremity at or above the ankle joint - or
- Loss of strength in the leg - or
- Ataxia of one leg - or
- clear athetosis - or
- Leg length difference of at least 7 cm.
The following applies:
- the athlete uses two skis and two sticks.
The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . Athletes in classes LW1-LW9 start standing. Athletes in classes LW1-LW4 (leg handicap) can be reclassified to seat class LW12.
