LW3 (Paralympics)

LW3 is a starting class for athletes in Paralympic winter sports for athletes in Alpine skiing , Nordic skiing and biathlon . The membership of athletes in the starting class is outlined as follows:

Skiers of class LW3 disabilities in both legs. One of the following minimum criteria must be met:

  • Loss of both lower extremities at least proximal to the metatarsals - or
  • Loss of strength in both legs - or
  • Hypotonia of both legs - or
  • Ataxia of both lower extremities - or
  • clear athetosis in the lower extremities - or
  • Forefoot dysmelia - or
  • Loss of movement in both knee joints.

The following applies:

  • the athlete uses prostheses and two skis and two sticks.

The division into classes indicates the degree of functional disability of an athlete that is relevant to competition . Athletes in classes LW1-LW9 start standing. Athletes in classes LW1-LW4 (leg handicap) can be reclassified to seat class LW12.
