LWL media center for Westphalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The LWL media center for Westphalia in Münster is a public educational and cultural institution sponsored by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe and one of two state media centers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Founded in 1928 as the "Landesbildstelle" (Landesbildstelle), the LWL Media Center for Westphalia - as it has been called since 2006 - today has a threefold mission: promoting learning with and via media in schools and extracurricular education, media-based documentation and communication of the history and present of Westphalia and the safeguarding of the photographic, filmic and tonal tradition of Westphalia in a picture, film and sound archive.

One of his special tasks is the media-supported mediation of the state part of Westphalia in school and extracurricular educational work. Films, photo documentations, audio books and multimedia productions make the past and present of Westphalia tangible. In an in-house studio, the recordings are processed into educational media and historical film and photo treasures from the region are collected in an archive.

The picture archive of the LWL media center, the picture archive Westphalia , archives, indexes and presents historical and current photographs from all over Westphalia . It is an extensive source of the history of the region and its people. Around 450,000 photographs from the period between 1850 and the present as well as 3,000 aerial photographs from the last 30 years illustrate Westphalian landscapes, cities and villages, agriculture, handicraft and industrial culture , art, Architecture, customs and, last but not least, the people and their everyday life in the course of time. Over 10 percent of the inventory can be researched and viewed online.

The film archive of the LWL media center has the task of collecting film documents from and about Westphalia, securing them, indexing them and making them accessible again. Since it was founded in the early 1990s, numerous municipal archives, museums, local history associations and other institutions have stored their films or film collections in the air-conditioned magazine rooms of the LWL media center. In return, the owners receive a playout of their treasures on a data carrier, so that the films remain present where they were made. Selected film documents are made available to the general public via the edition series “Westphalia in Historical Films”.

With Medienberatung NRW and FILM + SCHULE NRW , the LWL Media Center for Westphalia also performs state-wide tasks on behalf of the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Education. Together with the LVR center for media and education, the LWL media center operates the online service EDMOND NRW, which teachers can use to download educational media for their lessons free of charge. The so-called Pedagogical Map of North Rhine-Westphalia has also been online since 2014, opening up a wide range of extracurricular learning locations for schools - from museums to biological stations.
