The Junker wrasse ( Julidinae, Syn .: Corinae) are the most species-rich and diverse subfamily of the wrasse (Labridae). They are sometimes only as a tribe (then Julidini) viewed, but are then paraphyletic because the tribe cleaner fish (Labrichthyini) and occurring mainly in Australasia tribe Pseudolabrini among the Julidinae. Junker lipfish live around the world near the coast in tropical, subtropical and temperate seas, mostly on rocky or coral reefs . In total, almost 200 of the over 500 wrasse species belong to the Junker wrasse.
features
Junker wrasse have a cylindrical or laterally compressed body and an uninterrupted lateral line organ . Among them there are small forms of only 9 centimeters in length, but also large types with lengths of up to 1.20 meters. There are one or more pairs of enlarged teeth in the front jaw. Junker wrasse eat benthic , often hard-shelled invertebrates and small fish. Most species burrow in the sand in dangerous situations and at night to sleep. All junker wrasse are free spawners .
Systematics
The sister group of the Junker Wrasse is the cigar wrasse ( Cheilio inermis ).
