Notolabrus is a genus of wrasse found in the temperate and subtropical seas around western, eastern and southern Australia and New Zealand . Notolabrus species live mainly on rocky coasts and are among the most common fish here. Some species also live in kelp forests or directly in the area of the surf . Young fish prefer shallow water in quiet bays and stay between algae and seaweed. Adult animals also go to greater depths of up to 40 meters. There are also net catches from a depth of 150 meters.

The fish of this genus are quite large and reach lengths of 30 to 60 centimeters. There is a clear sexual dimorphism , males can be distinguished from females by their strong coloring. Notolabrus species predatory feed on a wide range of mainly invertebrates, with some species preferring molluscs and other crustaceans . They often swim after foraging rays and prey on the ground-dwelling invertebrates that are blown up.

The genus was only separated from Pseudolabrus in 1988 . Notolabrus species differ from this genus in some skeletal features and teeth.
