Pseudolabrus is a genus of wrasse found in the temperate and subtropical waters of the southern Indo-Pacific and northern Pacific . The species of this genus living in subtropical waters reach lengths of 20 centimeters, those in cooler regions of 30 centimeters. The body of the fish is covered by large cycloid scales that arevery narrowat the base of the dorsal fin and anal fin .
distribution
Three species of the genus live on the coasts of Japan , South Korea , China , Taiwan and the South China Sea , the range of the other nine extends from the Kermadec Islands over the coasts of Australia and New Zealand to the Juan Fernández Islands . Some of these species are endemic and only live near New Zealand, Rapa Iti , Easter Island or the Juan Fernández Islands. They avoid the tropics between latitude 20 ° north and 20 ° south . In the north they go up to 35 ° north latitude, in the south up to 40 °, a New Zealand species up to 50 ° south latitude.
Way of life
Pseudolabrus species live on rocky reefs, especially in shallow water, but sometimes at depths of more than 100 meters. Young fish live hidden between algae, adult animals are open. The males are territorial and live with several females and fry. When the male dies, the largest female undergoes a sex change and takes his position. The fish predatory feed on a wide range of invertebrates such as worms and mollusks .
Systematics
Pseudolabrus is very closely related to the genera Austrolabrus , Dotalabrus , Eupetrichthys , Notolabrus and Pictilabrus occurring in the same area and forms with them the tribe Pseudolabrini .
