Pictilabrus is a species of only three species of wrasse thatis poor in speciesand occurs in the temperate and subtropical waters of the Australian south coast and southwestern Australia. Pictilabrus species live in open water and onrocks that areheavilyovergrownwith algae and sponges or directly in the area of the surf . Young fish hide between the algae of rock reefs.
features
The fish of this genus reach lengths of 10 to 30 centimeters. There is a clear sexual dimorphism , males can be distinguished from females by their strong coloring. There is also a dimorphism in relation to the habitat. Populations in zones mainly overgrown by red algae are more brownish or red in color, while the animals living in regions with dominant green algae are more green or yellow in color. Pictilabrus species differ from the closely related genus Pseudolabrus mainly in their smaller head.
Pictilabrus species predatory feed on a wide range of mainly invertebrates such as worms and crustaceans .
