Thalassoma is a genus of wrasse (Labridae). Species from this genus live in the Mediterranean in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic , Indian and Pacific . The fish live in rock and coral reefs . Thalassoma species have the typical elongated, cylinder-shaped body of the Junker wrasse (Julidinae) and are eight to 46 centimeters long. As with many wrasse, juveniles , males and females are very different, always very brightly colored. Like most wrasse, the thalassoma species are free spawners who do not practice brood care and release their eggs and sperm into the open water. Young fish of some Thalassoma species, such as the blue-headed junker ( Thalassoma bifasciatum ) and the crescent moon junker ( Thalassoma lunare ) live like anemonefish between the tentacles of large sea anemones and are thus protected from predators.

In addition to these 28 species, the two species of the bird wrasse ( Gomphosus ) also belong to the genus from a phylogenetic point of view. Thalassoma can be divided into eight clearly delineated clades , in which species from certain marine regions such as the Indo-Pacific , western or eastern Atlantic are grouped together. Gomphosus is a sister group of an Indo-Pacific clade within Thalassoma .
