The song consists of eight short, two-verse stanzas, the first verse of which always forms the end rhyme in heureux ( French 'happy'). In each stanza a person with certain characteristics is addressed; the second verse is about singing the "song of the happy people" to that very person. At the end of each stanza, the second verse is repeated by the choir . There is no refrain.
The text of the song also has religious references. For example in the line of text “Tu n'as pas de titre ni de grade, mais tu dis TU quand tu parles à dieu.” - “You have neither a nobility nor academic degree, but you say YOU when you talk to God.”
Cover versions
Immediately after the first publication, two German-language cover versions were created: Daliah Lavi published her version on the album Neuer Wind in 1976 under the title That always remains a secret . In the same year Rex Gildo brought out his interpretation of King in this World on the album Take out the time for love . In 1982 Katja Ebstein also performed the version by Daliah Lavi.
In the Netherlands , too , where the original had reached its highest chart position, numerous artists reinterpreted the chanson, for example Willeke Alberti 1989, Sandra Denotté 1998 (Belgian singer with text in Dutch), The Sunsets 2011.
In 2011 the French singer Zaz released La Ballade des gens heureux as a duet with Gérard Lenorman.
