Roberto Ferruzzi
Roberto Ferruzzi (born December 16, 1853 in Šibenik in Dalmatia (now Croatia ), † February 16, 1934 in Luvigliano , Torreglia municipality ) was an Italian painter.
Life
He came to Venice when he was four but returned to Dalmatia after the sudden death of his father. He lived there until the age of 14 and devoted himself to classical studies and painting. He later came back to Italy and lived there in Luvigliano near Venice. It was there that his most famous works were created, including the “Madonna of the Street”. He died on February 16, 1934 and was buried in the Luvigliano cemetery.
Madonna from the street
Roberto Ferruzzi was best known after his participation in the second Venice Biennale in 1897. There he exhibited the above-mentioned picture with the intention of depicting a mother with her child without any religious background. It was only with this exhibition that it was renamed “La Madonnina”. In German the picture is also known as "Madonna von der Straße", "Maria am weg", "Zigeuner-Madonna" and other names. The work was later reproduced many times, especially for Christmas cards. The original was probably lost during the Second World War. The American Mary Bovo, she lives as sister Angela Marie in an order, is the daughter of Italian immigrants and discovered during her genealogical research that the picture shows her mother Angelina Cian with her one-year-old brother. Since then she has been looking for the original. The last known owner of the picture was John George Alexander Leishman, who died in France in 1924. The picture is believed to be in Pennsylvania today. But there is also the possibility that the image was lost at sea when it was transferred to America.
