La Mesada is a village in northwest Argentina . It belongs to the department of Iruya in the province of Salta and is located northeast of the village of Iruya and 4 km west of the village of Aguanita on the Nazareno River , at an altitude of 3000 m in the Sierra El Arpero , a mountain range in the Eastern Andean Cordillera . La Mesada consists of the two districts La Mesada Grande and La Mesada Chica .
La Mesada has the status of a civil association called Centro Aborigen de La Mesada Grande (center of the indigenous people of La Mesada Grande). About 40 families live in La Mesada. The village has a small, poorly equipped health station, a primary school (escuela N ° 4212) and a parish and grows maize and potatoes for its own use.
The route from Iruya to La Mesada goes along the Iruya and Nazareno rivers , which have to be crossed in several places. With riding animals (7 to 8 hours) or all-terrain vehicles, this is possible in the months of July to October. The last stretch into the village is only possible on foot or on horseback. In the rainy months from November to June, the rivers swell too much, so that only the considerable detour via mule tracks on the mountain slopes remains.
