River course

Source of the Iruya River at Abra Laite

On the section between the source and the village of Iruya, the Iruya River is crossed by tributaries from the side valleys Lacho, Lacho Chico, Caranchi, Pie de la Cuesta, Antigal, Toroyoc, Pamahuaico, Campo Redondo, Campo Corrales, Pueblo Nuevo, El Chorro and Milmahuasi (or Capilla) fed. About 2 km north of the village of Iruya , the San Isidro flows in from the west , which is the largest tributary up to this point. From there to the village of Las Higueras , the Iruya is mainly fed by the Agua Blanca and the San Juan , as well as by Chañar, Taco Pampa, Corpusito and Chaupi-Higuera.

In the northern catchment area the Nazareno (or Poscaya) and the Vizcarra (or Bacoya) are the strongest tributaries. The Vizcarra flows into the Nazareno about 15 km north of Las Higueras . Thereafter, the Nazareno receives tributaries from Arroyo San Pedro, Mesada Chica, Mesada Grande, Tacupampa, Estanque, Aguanita, Zapallar and Arpero. The village of Las Higueras is located in a volcano that forms the tributary of the Arroyo Higueras. Together with the Nazareno, the Arroyo Higueras enters the Iruya at this point. Then the Iruya is fed by Lopieara and Tarayoc, in San Antonio by Campo Grande and Cueva del Toro, further downstream by Panal, Cebilar, Arroyo Zapallar, Arroyo Sauzalito, Astillerito, Río Monoyoc and Mulular.

In Puesto Rioja , the Río Astillero and Río Cañas flow into the Iruya. They form the largest tributaries in this section. From Isla de Cañas the Iruya is fed by the Río Piedras and Río Negro. Then it flows into the pescado.
