The La Motte winery is located near the South African city ​​of Franschhoek , Stellenbosch municipality in the Cape Winelands district . The 104 hectares of cultivation area are oriented to the south / southwest, and are at an altitude of 300 to 400 m above sea level. Around 900 tons of wine (300,000 bottles) are produced annually, only around half of which is marketed under the La Motte label. The Pinot Noir grapes, for example, are sold entirely to other companies. La Motte has 1200 barrique barrels .

history

In 1695 the German Hans Hattingh bought land here, which he sold in 1709 to his neighbor, the Huguenot Pierre Joubert. He named it after his French hometown “La Motte d'Aigues”. Wine was grown here from 1752, and the Cape Dutch-style mansion from this period was declared a national monument in 1975. In the 19th century, the winery, like Boschendal , belonged to the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony of Cecil Rhodes .
