Brunhilde's stone

The Pierre Brunehaut (also Pierre Brunehault ; German  "Brunhildenstein" ) is a slightly trapezoidal , plate-like menhir . It stands southwest of Hollain, not far from the Scheldt and the border with France, and is the largest menhir in Wallonia , Belgium .

The 0.55 to 0.6 meter thick stone made of northern French Landenian sandstone is 4.25 meters high and about three meters wide. The west side is shiny polished from the rain. The east side is littered with small holes and has some large grooves. It is buried about two meters deep.

Old documents, including an unsigned copper engraving from 1773, show the monument in an inclined position. In 1819 the authorities had the menhir erected. In various legends, the menhir is connected to Queen Brunhilde († 613), who ruled Austrasia for almost half a century.
