At 4,369 m, La Plata Peak is one of the 54 " Fourteeners " in the Rocky Mountains in the US state of Colorado . It is located in the Sawatch Range in Chaffee County about 20 miles southwest of Leadville . La Plata Peak is entirely within the San Isabel National Forest and the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness .
The name is derived from la plata , the Spanish word for silver. The mountain got its name because of the many silver deposits in the area.
