Labeo pangusia , also known as Ghora Maach, Ghora Muikha, গুড়া মাছ or Bammlung in India, is an economically important carp fish from the Indo-Asian region.

distribution and habitat

Labeo pangusia occurs primarily in rivers and lakes in Pakistan , India , Nepal and Bangladesh . It is also found in some parts of Afghanistan , Bhutan, and Myanmar . Mostly adheres labeo pangusia on in the fast-flowing upper reaches of rivers. The home of the fish is believed to be in the Barak River in Jiribam / Manipur in India.

description

Labeo pangusia has specially shaped lips to graze algae and diatoms from rocks and underwater objects. The species can be up to 90 centimeters long in exceptional cases. In doing so, it weighs 10 kilograms.

Way of life

The Labeo pangusia, which lives in swarms, feeds on algae and diatoms. It belongs to a relatively environmentally tolerant fish species that can tolerate both very soft and hard water. Sexual maturity takes place very late at the age of 14.

use

Labeo pangusia is a very valued and widespread food fish in India. Smaller specimens can also be kept as ornamental fish in the aquarium. Although some authors consider this species of fish to be critically endangered, it has not yet been added to the IUCN Red List .
