The Lac Mégantic [ ˌlakmegɑ̃ˈtik ] is a lake in the Canadian province of Québec .

It is located south of Québec, in eastern Estrie , 6 km from the border with the United States .

The city of Lac-Mégantic is at the northern end, at the outflow where the Rivière Chaudière rises. The villages of Marston and Piopolis are on the western bank. At the upper, southern end of the lake there is a 4.7 km² swamp . The average outflow from the lake is 16.9 m³ / s.

Before roads were built, the lake served as a route between Québec and Maine . In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War , 600 Americans, led by Colonel Benedict Arnold, used the lake for their attempted invasion of Canada on their way from Maine to Québec .
