In 1935, 18 letters were found in the outer gate area of the southwest bastion. They lay in a layer of fire under the floor of Persian period buildings. In 1938 three more ostracas were found. The majority of the letters belong to the time of Nebuchadnezzar II and his second campaign to Judah , immediately before the conquest of Jerusalem in 587 BC. Chr.
