Ladbergen Association of Cities

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ladbergener Städtebund was an alliance of the cities of Münster , Osnabrück , Minden , Coesfeld and Herford that was concluded in Ladbergen in 1246 .

The deposition of Emperor Frederick II (reigned 1212 / 1215–1250) by Pope Innocent IV (reigned 1243–1254) at the first council of Lyon (1245), the prevalence of feuding and, specifically, an alliance of the bishops of Münster and Osnabrück (1245) threatened Westphalian trading cities, above all Münster and Osnabrück, in their activities. On May 22nd, 1246, the Ladbergener Städtebund was concluded, which represents a protective alliance of the cities of Münster and Osnabrück against their city lords, but which also included the cities and soft images of Minden, Coesfeld and Herford that were "facing" towards Münster and Osnabrück . In the federal statutes, the regulations on the safety of citizens in trade, traffic and the market are a focus. Abuses by the nobility are to be followed by sanctions against the perpetrators, and conflicts between the cities in the federal government are to be resolved by arbitration commissions. The Ladbergener Bund thus results from the increased importance of the Westphalian trading cities. Even if nothing more is known about the activities of the federal government, it is at the beginning of a series of amalgamations between Westphalian cities (1246–1338) such as B. the " Werner Bund ", founded in 1253, of mixed-class state peace orders (1298-1392) and of city alliances within the Hanseatic League (14th / 15th centuries).
