Werner Bund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Werner Städtebund was a medieval city federation of the cities of Dortmund , Soest , Münster , Lippstadt and later Osnabrück . It was closed on July 17, 1253 on the Christophorus Bridge spanning the Lippe near Werne ; Osnabrück joined it on September 10, 1268. The aim of the federal government was to secure peace and free trade.

The Werner Bund is part of a series of similar amalgamations of Westphalian cities in the 13th and 14th centuries, such as the previous Ladbergener Städtebund from 1246. These early amalgamations were forerunners of the Städtehanse in the Westphalian region.
