Ladislaus Hunyadi (Hungarian Hunyadi László ; * 1433 ; † March 16, 1457 ) was a Hungarian statesman and warrior.

Life

He was the eldest son of Johann Hunyadi and Elisabeth Szilágyi and was born in Hunedoara Castle . From an early age he accompanied his father on his campaigns. After the second battle on the Amselfeld in 1448 he was held hostage for his father by the Serbian despot Georg Branković . In 1452 he was a member of a delegation that went to Vienna to get the Hungarian King Ladislaus V back. In 1453 he was already a ban from Croatia - Dalmatia . At the Estates meeting in Buda , he resigned all his dignity because of the accusations made by Ulrich von Cillis and other enemies. The dispute was eventually settled and he was betrothed to Maria, daughter of the palatine László Garai .

After the death of his father in 1456, Ladislaus was declared responsible for the alleged debts of the older Hunyadi to the state by his arch-enemy Cilli (who in the meantime ruled for the minor King Hungary with unlimited power). At the meeting of the estates in Futak in October 1456, however, he defended himself so skillfully that Cilli feigned a reconciliation and promised to protect the Hunyadis, on the condition that they would first have to cede all the royal castles that had been entrusted to them.

They started with the fortress of Belgrade , of which Ladislaus was in command. Cilli intended to take the king with him to Belgrade and have Hunyadi murdered in the fortress, but Hunyadi was warned in good time and only allowed Ladislaus V and Cilli in, but not their mercenaries. The next morning (November 9, 1456) Cilli suddenly attacked Hunyadi during a private conversation. The commandant's friends heard the clang of weapons, intervened and struck Cilli down. The young king, who was privy to the plans, pardoned Hunyadi and swore during a conversation with his mother in Temesvár that he would protect the family. As a token of his sincerity, he appointed Hunyadi as treasurer and captain general of the kingdom. Hunyadi, suspecting no harm, accompanied the king to Buda . There he was arrested on the grounds that he was planning Ladislaus' demise. Without observing any legal formalities, he was sentenced to death and beheaded on March 16, 1457.

His brother Matthias Corvinus was crowned King of Hungary in 1458 at the age of fourteen.

The life of Ladislaus served as the template for the romantic opera Hunyadi László (1844) by Ferenc Erkel .
