Laetare Jerusalem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laetare Jerusalem ( Latin : Rejoice Jerusalem! ) Is a papal bull that Pope Paul III. issued on November 19, 1544 and which was published on November 30 of the same year.

Paul III had initially scheduled a council for November 1, 1542 in Trento, but this had to be postponed due to the "Fourth Italian War" between Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France. In Laetare Jerusalem the Pope is now calling another ecumenical council that is to begin on March 15, 1545, Laetare Sunday . The name of the bull corresponds to its first words from Isa 66,10-11  EU , which at the same time form the beginning of the introit of the Roman Catholic and Evangelical Lutheran liturgy and after which the fourth Sunday of Lent is named.

In fact, the Council of Trent could only be opened on December 13, 1545 (although the first session took place on May 31) and lasted four sessions until 1563.
