The Lago Grande di Viso is a mountain lake located at 2,600 m a.s.l. on the eastern flank of Monte Viso , the highest peak in the Cottian Alps at 3,841 m in the west of the Piedmont region .
The Karsee has an extension of about 500 meters and is located in the municipality of Crissolo , about 5 km as the crow flies from this and a few kilometers south of the source of the Po . Several mountain routes and crossings lead past here, u. a. the popular 3-day hike Giro del Monviso .
The Rifugio Quintino Sella ( 2640 m slm ) is located on a rock spur directly above the lake , the most important starting point for climbing Monviso. The refuge , built in 1905, was initially called Rifugio Quintino Sella al Lago Grande .
