Lagoon Island ( English for lagoon island ) is an island west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the northernmost of the Léonie Islands and is located at the entrance to Ryder Bay on the southeast coast of Adelaide Island .
It was discovered during the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . It was named, however, by participants in the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) led by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill , who visited the island in February 1936. It is named after the fact that the island forms a lagoon with Kirsty Island to the west .
