The Laguna Superior is the largest of five interconnected lagoons on the Pacific side of the isthmus of Tehuantepec in the southeast of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico .

To the north of the lagoon, which is a maximum of 60 km long and 22 km wide, there is a gap in the Sierra Madre del Sur , through which often strong seaward winds blow. It is separated from the Pacific and the Gulf of Tehuantepec by two smaller lagoons, the Mar Tileme in the south and the Laguna Inferior in the east, and by the two parallel spits of the Mar Tileme. An extensive population of foraminifera in the flat is just as much a sign of a lack of water exchange as the lack of tides and marshland. There are several islands in the north and east. Salt is extracted in some places. In the west flows the namesake of the isthmus, the Río Tehuantepec . Larger cities are San Mateo del Mar in the south, San Dionisio del Mar in the east, through whose nearby Bocabarra , with its lighthouse, drains into the Laguna Inferior, and Juchitán de Zaragoza , Santo Domingo de Tehuantepec and Salina Cruz with its Sea port in the northwest.
