Kandla ( Gujarati : કંડલા ) is a city with a seaport in the Kachchh district in the state of Gujarat in western India . The port on the Gulf of Kachchh is one of the most important ports on the west coast of the Indian subcontinent . The city emerged in the 1950s when the Karachi seaport remained in Pakistan after the division of India and Pakistan .

The port, also known as Deendayal Port Trust , handled 72,225 million tonnes of goods in 2008/09, an increase of over 11% over the previous period; the largest share is made up of oil.
1998 cyclone
In 1998 a tropical cyclone hit Kandla. Around 900 people were officially killed. Most of them were workers in the salt marshes who were caught by the storm surge . More than 1,800 people were injured, often from collapsing buildings and huts.
