Laima Žurgina

Laima Žurgina (born September 24, 1943 in Riga ) is a Latvian documentary film director and screenwriter.

Life

Laima Žurgina graduated from the State All-Union Institute for Cinematography (WGIK) in Moscow from 1963 to 1968 , and subsequently worked on film portraits of leading representatives from the fields of art and culture. Her diploma thesis dealt with the solo dancer of the Bolshoi Theater Maris Liepa (1971). From May 1968 to June 1990 she worked as a director in the Riga Film Studio and directed over fifty documentaries and more than one hundred newsreels. Since then she has been working freelance.

Her documentaries have received multiple awards and are often about family relationships, sport and the life and work of Latvian artists and cultural workers.

Žurgina ran in 2001 for election to the Riga City Council for the Latvian Way party .
