The genus Orthopoxvirus ( OPXV ) has a linear double-stranded DNA (130 to 375Kb) and a size of 170 to 450 nm. Orthopoxvirus infections are also referred to as mammalian pox in animal disease legislation . Infections with orthopox viruses are among the notifiable animal diseases in Germany .

It includes the following species with their varieties :

• Variola virus alias Orthopoxvirus variola , also Orthopoxvirus variolae = Variolavirus - final host human → real smallpox
  • Orthopoxvirus variola var. Alastrim = kaffirpox virus - definitive host human → white pox
• Vaccinia virus alias Orthopoxvirus vaccinia = Vacciniavirus - final hosts of all mammals → smallpox
  • Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var. Equi = horsepox virus - final hosts horse , donkey
  • Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var Bubali. = Buffalo pox virus - Endwirt Buffalo
  • Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var. Cuniculi = rabbitpox virus - final host rabbit
• Cowpox virus (officially Cowpox virus alias Orthopoxvirus bovis ) - final hosts cattle , sheep , goats , cats , dogs , wild rodents → cowpox , catpox
  • Elephantpox virus (Orthopoxvirus bovis var.elefanti - definitive host elephants , mainly Asian , less African elephants )
• Ectromelia virus known as ectromelia virus , orthopoxvirus muris , mouse pox virus - Endwirte mouse , fox , mink
• Camelpox virus alias Orthopoxvirus cameli = camelpox virus - final host camel (in Africa, the Middle East and Asia), but also humans
• Monkeypox virus known as orthopoxvirus simiae = monkeypox virus - Endwirt monkeys (as rhesus monkey , cynomolgus monkey ), but also people who probably rodents (such as squirrels , rats ) → monkeypox
• Raccoonpox virus = raccoon pox virus - final host raccoon
• Taterapox virus = Taterapockenvirus - Endwirt Rodents
