Laine Randjärv (until 2011 Laine Jänes ; born July 30, 1964 in Moscow ) is an Estonian politician . She was Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia from April 2007 to April 2011 .

Life and politics

Laine Randjärv graduated from school in Tartu in 1980 . Until 1983 she attended the local Heino-Eller-Musikgymnasium. She then studied music education and choral conducting at the Tallinn State Music Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ) until 1989 , where she passed her master's degree in 1996.

From 1995 to 1998 Laine Randjärv was cultural advisor for the Tartu City Council, from 1997 to 1998 head of the Tartu branch of the Estonian Academy of Music and from 1998 to 2002 director of the Vanemuine Concert Hall in Tartu.

Randjärv has been a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Eesti Reformierakond ) since August 2002 . From 2002 to 2004 Laine Randjärv held the post of Deputy Mayor of Tartu , from September 2004 to April 2007 she was the mayor of the second largest Estonian city. She succeeded Andrus Ansip , who moved to the Estonian government as Minister of Economics.

In April 2007 the new Prime Minister Andrus Ansip appointed her as Minister of Culture in his cabinet . In April 2011 Randjärv resigned from the cabinet. In the 2011 parliamentary election she was elected as a member of the Riigikogu . In April 2011 Randjärv was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Private life

Laine Jänes is divorced and has two daughters.
