Clearest lake in the world |
The Lake Constance ( Māori Rotopōhueroa ) is a small lake in the region Tasman in Nelson Lakes National Park in the north of the South Island of New Zealand . It is located in the northern part of the Southern Alps . In Anglo-American usage, there is a risk of confusion with Lake Constance , which is also called "Lake Constance" in English.
The lake is traversed by the West Branch of the Sabine River , which is part of the Buller River system . It feeds the much smaller Blue Lake . The water seeps underground through the debris from a landslide that dammed Lake Constance.
Role in the Māori
The Rotopōhueroa is located in the Rohe (tribal area) of the Iwi Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō . The lake was traditionally used in ceremonies in which the bones of dead women were cleansed and the soul of the deceased was released on his journey to mythical Hawaiki . For the Iwi, the water of the lake is therefore tapu . The Blue Lake was used for the same purpose for the male deceased. The name of the lake in the Māori language, Rotopōhueroa , means "long calabash".
