Lake James is a reservoir in the US state of North Carolina . The lake has an area of about 27.6 km² when it is fully blocked. It is located in Burke and McDowell Counties .
Lake James is the uppermost reservoir in the river system of the Catawba River and is dammed by three dams :
- Linville Dam: 48.8 m high and 404 m long
- Paddy Creek Dam: 50.3 meters high and 490.7 meters long
- Catawba Dam: 45.7 meters high and 961.6 meters long
The neighboring dams Linville and Paddy Creek block the outflows of Paddy Creek and Linville River , further south of the Catawba Dam that of the Catawba River. The southern reservoir of the Catawba River and the northern Linville Paddy Creek Basin are connected by a passage less than 100 m wide. North Carolina Highway 126 also bridges the lake there.
Erected Lake James from 1916 to 1923 by Duke Energy . It is named after James Buchanan Duke , a co-founder of the company. The reservoir is used to generate electricity, the power house is located below the Linville dam. The Bridgewater Hydro Station, named after a railway depot of the Southern Railway , has an output of 20 MW and went into operation in 1919.
In addition to producing electricity, the lake is also a recreational area. Large areas of the northwest bank are part of Lake James State Park .
