The Lake Kitezh ( Russian озеро Китеж , Ozero Kitezh ) is a lake on King George Iceland , the largest of the South Shetland Islands . At almost 500 meters (0.3 miles ) in length , it is the largest lake on the Fildes Peninsula and is located northwest of Ardley Cove . It was used as a water reservoir by the Soviet Bellingshausen station, located 500 meters south-east, and by the Chilean Rodolfo Marsh station (now again Base Eduardo Frei ).
The lake was named озеро Китеж on a map of the Soviet Antarctic Expedition on a map from 1973 - after the legendary submerged Russian city of Kitesh - and Lake Kitezh on an English-language map by the same authors . The British Antarctic Place-names Committee (APC) adopted this name in 1980.
Station Creek ( Russian ручей Станционный , because of its proximity to Bellingshausen Station) flows from the lake into Ardley Cove.
