The Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva ( Spanish , often referred to as Frei Station ) is a Chilean research station on King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica . It is located on the ice-free Fildes Peninsula at the head of Ardley Cove , just 200 meters from the Russian Bellingshausen station . Also nearby are the Chinese Great Wall Station , the Uruguayan Artigas Base , the South Korean King Sejong Station , the Argentine Carlini Base , the Brazilian Comandante-Ferraz station , the Polish Arctowski station and the Peruvian Macchu Picchu station . The Arturo Prat station, which is also Chilean , is about 50 km to the west.

history

The station was built by the Fuerza Aérea de Chile and inaugurated as Centro Meteorológico Eduardo Frei on March 7, 1969 by the namesake, then Chilean President Eduardo Frei Montalva . It is in operation all year round. In 1981 the complex was expanded to include additional buildings. In the meantime, parts of the station are being continued as the Russian Bellingshausen station and the Chilean Escudero station .
