Villa Las Estrellas (in German roughly "Star City") is a Chilean village in the Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva on King George Island off the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the larger of two civilian settlements on the Antarctic continent ; the second is the Argentine Esperanza station on the Antarctic mainland. The Chilean settlement is home to around 150 residents in summer and around 80 in winter, including children.
The town belonging to the municipality of Antártica in the Chilean province of Antártica Chilena was founded on April 9, 1984 at Maxwell Bay . It consists of 18 residential buildings. There is also a school F-50 Villa Las Estrellas with two teachers and around 15 children in grades 1 to 8, a hospital with a doctor and a nurse, a citizens' office , a post office , a branch of the Banco de Crédito e Inversiones , a library , a shop and the Catholic Chapel of Santa María Reina de la Paz . In addition, the town has its own radio station.
Villa Las Estrellas is currently one of the most important tourist destinations in Antarctica. The travelers are flown in via Punta Arenas .
