The Lake Leake is an artificial lake in the east of the Australian state of Tasmania . The small village on its west bank bears the same name.

The lake covers an area of ​​6.8 km² and has a water content of 22.076 million m³.

The lake is fed by the Snowy River , which enters at its north end. The water drains into the Elizabeth River on the east bank . The sea water has an electrical conductivity of 56 μS / cm.

Fishing

The lake is used for sport fishing. You can catch brook trout , brown trout and rainbow trout there .

history

The artificial lake was named after Charles Henry Leake , a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council (House of Lords). It was created after a long debate. The 5 m high dam was completed in 1884. Initially, Lake Leake had a volume of 19.9 million m³ and an area of ​​6 km². In 1971 the spout was raised by 18 cm to enlarge the storage space. The water is used for fish farming and is used for agricultural irrigation. The lake is always kept at least half full.
