The Fairbairn Dam is a dam in the east of the Australian state of Queensland . The lake is 25 km southwest of the town of Emerald, almost on the Tropic of Capricorn . The Fairbairn Dam was built on the Nogoa River in 1972 , creating the second largest lake in Queensland, Lake Maraboon. Maraboon is a word from the local Aboriginal language and means in German where the black ducks fly .

The main purpose of Lake Maraboon is to irrigate agricultural land. Around 300 irrigation systems for cotton , citrus fruit and other plantations are connected to the reservoir. The reservoir is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of 31.7 m. There are no restrictions on water sports and the reservoir even has a concrete slipway for boats.

history

On July 1, 2003, the cotton farmers who are dependent on the reservoir had to accept cuts of 75% in the permissible water abstraction. In November 2006, the reservoir reached its lowest water level to date with only 14% of the maximum storage volume. In the summer of the same year, the water level sank further to 12% of the maximum storage volume due to reduced inflows and increased evaporation.

On January 18, 2008 at around 12 noon, the reservoir overflowed for the first time in 17 years due to heavy local rainfall (see photo). On January 20, 2008, about 48 hours later, the water level was 3.5 m above the outlet. This corresponds approximately to a degree of filling of 156% of the maximum storage volume. On January 22nd, 2008 the highest water level was reached with 4.5 m above the outlet. Just a week earlier, the water level was only 29% of its maximum capacity. Downstream, 2,700 residents had to be evacuated due to flooding.

Sun Water , the operating company of the reservoir, has launched a program to increase the storage volume in order to increase the safety of the reservoir. In the long term, the outlet will be enlarged.

fishing

Barramundis were used in the reservoir , as well as the "Mary River cod" ( Macculochella mariensis ), Leichhardt's bone- picking fish ( Scleropages leichardti ), perch and tiger fish . Eeltail catfish ( Tandanus tandanus ), spotted bass , crayfish , sooty tiger fish ( Hephaestus fuliginosus ) and cod perch are also available. In Lake Maraboon, fishing is prohibited in an area 200 m from the dam.
