Lake Miccosukee (Florida)
Lake Miccosukee

Lake Miccosukee is a large, shallow, and partially marshy lake in the US state of Florida in the southeastern United States .

The lake is about 3 miles west of Monticello and is in the area of Jefferson County . Only the west bank belongs to Leon County . Its north-south extension is in the order of 10 kilometers. In the north-east and south, the lake is less than two kilometers wide and several kilometers in the middle.

The water level is influenced by an active sinkhole at the northern end of the lake, the water level shows the current groundwater level of the Florida aquifer , as the sinkhole extends into the groundwater-bearing layers. The lake is connected underground to the St. Marks River . The name of the lake is attributed to the Native Americans , the Miccosukee , who lived on its banks. The Apalachee also settled the lakeshore .

Today the lake is used as a recreation area, especially for hunting on waterfowl . A rare plant that only occurs in three locations, the "Miccosukee Gooseberry" ( Ribes echinellum ) occurs in two locations on Lake Miccosukee.
