Monticello is a city and also the county seat of Jefferson County in the US state of Florida with 2506 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Monticello is about 40 km east of Tallahassee .

history

The city was founded in 1827. The city was connected to the railway network in 1888 by the Savannah, Florida & Western Railway with a branch line from Thomasville in Georgia to Drifton, a little south of Monticello. The route was extended in 1928 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to Perry .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 2506 inhabitants were distributed among 1255 households. The population density was 284.8 inh / km². 43.1% of the population identified themselves as white , 54.2% as African American and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 2.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 31.3% of all households lived in 29.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 63.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.35 people and the average family size was 2.99 people.

25.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 25.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 46.1% of the population were male and 53.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 41,862, with 14.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 99.44% of the population and 0.56% spoke Spanish .

Monticello is crossed by US Highways 19 and 90 ( SR 10 ). The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 60 km west).

The crime rate in 2010 was 478 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were three robberies, 34 personal injuries, 44 break-ins, seven thefts and one car theft.
