Perry is a city and also the county seat of Taylor County in the US state of Florida with 7017 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Perry is about 90 km southeast of Tallahassee .

history

Before 1875 the place was called Rosehead and then renamed Perrytown . The name was changed in honor of Madison S. Perry , the fourth governor of Florida. The town part of the name was later dropped. In 1903 Perry was officially promoted to City .

In 1904 the South Georgia Railroad built a railway line from Greenville to Perry and in 1909 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a railway connection from Perry to Newberry and in 1928 another line to Monticello , which made Perry a major hub. Today the Georgia and Florida Railway operates in freight traffic on the route from Perry via Greenville to Adel in Georgia, the routes to Monticello and Newberry, however, have been closed. Large parts of the disused routes around Perry have now been converted into the Nature Coast State Trail .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 7,017 inhabitants were distributed over 2,844 households. The population density was 291.2 inh / km². 55.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 40.1% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 2.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 32.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 30.5% of all households. 64.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.49 people and the average family size was 3.09 people.

28.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 46.6% of the population were male and 53.4% ​​were female.

The median annual income was $ 31,789, with 26.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 97.13% of the population, 2.10% spoke Spanish and 0.78% spoke German .

The Old Perry Post Office and Old Taylor County Jail are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Perry is traversed by US Highways 19 , 27 , 98, and 221 and Florida State Roads 20 and 30 . The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 90 km northwest).

The crime rate in 2010 was 706 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There was one murder, 16 rapes, eight robberies, 86 personal injuries, 92 break-ins, 156 thefts, one car theft and three arson attacks.
