The Hum (dt. The hum ) is a song of the Greek-Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike , in cooperation with the Dutch DJ and producer Ummet Ozcan . The track first appeared on April 20, 2015 as a single on the music portal Beatport . The instrumental piece belongs to the Electro House subgenre Big Room . As early as 2014, the first previews of the play appeared under the title The Wolf . The reason for this was the use of a sample from the film The Wolf of Wall Street .

background

Emergence

The Hum was written by the brothers Dimitri and Michael Thivaios alias Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike together with Ummet Ozcan. Although they usually work closely with the record label " Spinnin 'Records ", they were not supported by it on this track. The Hum was first played at Tomorrowland 2014 and was quickly recognized as a collaboration with Ummet Ozcan, as the style is very similar to his. In the Tomorrowland Aftermovie 2014, the soundtrack of which was produced by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, they officially announced the collab for the first time. Due to the use of a sample from The Wolf of Wall Street , the title The Wolf was initially assumed. On March 16, 2015, Ozcan posted a picture of a little wolf on his Instagram profile, which also suggests the initial use of the same title in the production of the song. Shortly after their live performance at the Ultra Music Festival 2015, the duo announced the track's release date. On April 20, 2015, the trio released the song on the record label "Smash the House". In selected countries, including Germany, the single was only released on May 8, 2015. A remix by the Belgian DJ and producer Lost Frequencies was released as an independent single for download. The song begins with a one-minute intro. This is followed by a catchy kick and the sample from The Wolf of Wall Street . This is the humming and simultaneous tapping on the chest, which Mark Hanna Jordan Belford teaches. After this part falls silent for a short time, the bridge starts at 1 minute and 45 seconds, during which the melody of the drop and the constantly repeating shout “Raise them up when the bass be dropping!” Can be heard. After the shout “Raise them up when we dont stop rocking!” Starts after the last 2 minutes and 15 seconds, the drop sets in, which is strongly reminiscent of the past Ummet Ozcan tracks. At 3 minutes, the second lead appears, which is very different from the first. In contrast to the first lead, this one has a melody and the hum gets louder and louder. At the fortieth second of the third minute, the melody begins as the second main part and the hum remains constantly loud. After a fifteen second bridge from 3:50 to 4:05, the second drop sets in, ends at 4 minutes and 50 seconds and turns into a one-minute outro.

promotion

The song was first played by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike themselves on July 18, 2014 at Tomorrowland 2014. It was then used by DJs such as Hardwell , Martin Garrix and W&W in their live sets. In addition to a number of positive reviews on the Internet, there were numerous remakes and speculation about an early release. In particular, her appearances with the song at major festivals received attention. This was due to the fact that Like Mike asked the audience to pound the chest and hum the melody, just like Belford did in the movie. The whole thing took place with sometimes several hundred thousand spectators and created a very positive mood. The performances reached a total of over half a million views and increased the demand for a completed studio recording. The first official previews of the studio recording appeared, apart from the Tomorrowland Aftermovie 2014, in March 2015, but under the title The Hum , which caused confusion among fans as it was strongly assumed that the track would appear under the name The Wolf . On March 29, 2015 Like Mike posted a video in his Snapchat story, which shows the brothers and the entire management at a dinner together while they hum the melody and pound their chest. The song reached another place in the Tomorrowland Brasil Aftermovie 2015.

Music video

background

The song's official music video was first released on May 5, 2015 on the Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike official YouTube channel. Images of the set appeared on her Instagram profile in advance, and the faces of two film stars were pixelated, which should increase the tension. It turned out that Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen and Belgian film artist Jean-Claude Van Damme are hiding behind the censored images. On April 21, 2015, the duo posted a teaser of the music video on Facebook.

The music video received very positive reviews because, unlike numerous current videos, including many of their own, it is not a simple compilation of their live performances. It was announced that it had a cost of around $ 400,000. After its release, it was viewed almost 10 million times and rated positively over 120 thousand times within just three months. Was described as a mixture of the two party films Hangover and Project X .

content

The full version is 4 minutes and 44 seconds long. It starts with a look into a villa. The camera's field of view wanders from room to room and shows a lot of devastation and exhausted, sleeping, young people. Among other things, they lie in a rabbit costume in the full bathtub or somewhere on the floor. Like Mike is shown in bed among several scantily clad women and Dimitri Vegas on a rubber animal next to the pool. A small, clothed monkey sits on Dimitri Vegas' back and wakes him up. Next to the soft, slow hum of the melody you can hear a voice asking "What happenned yesterday?" After a quick flashback, the intro of the song begins and a view of the villa is shown. Ummet Ozcan, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike all send a text message saying "Party at our house tonight." As a result, more and more people trickle in. Including a dark-skinned woman who comes ridden on an elephant. A suspicious looking man cleaning his car tries to reach the police, but they too are sitting among an already high number of young people in the living room of the villa. The clad monkey is shown in another car with the registration number "The Hum". During the bridge you can see all the visitors with cups in their hands, while the mood seems to rise. The monkey opens the trunk and an alligator jumps towards him. The monkey flees towards the villa and the crowd begins to celebrate when the drop is put in. Suddenly the doorbell rings and the music stops. All eyes are directed towards the door in which there is a man with his back turned towards the entrance, elegantly dressed. While he turns around and turns out to be Charlie Sheen, he asks the question “Who fucking died?” And the music starts playing again at full volume. Vegas, Mike and Ozcan are currently at the DJ booth jumping up and down. In the villa, among other things, pillow fights and lap dancing are shown. At the end of the drop the alligator is shown. The latter growls at Jean-Claude Van Damme, the latter roars back and the alligator withdraws. An aerial photo shows the crowds in the pool, while Alex Andre van den Hoeff of the Canadian DJ duo Dvbbs has now also met the three DJs . At the beginning of the second lead, Dimitri Vegas beats Van Damme in an arm wrestling and the party continues. Shortly afterwards, Van Damme puts on a motorcycle helmet out of spite and sinks it into the pool at the beginning of the second drop. Shortly afterwards he duels with Like Mike in the boxing ring and a minimal fire breaks out. A scene in which Sheen is asked whether he will appear at Tomorrowland Brazil the next day, along with his approval, ends the song. In the outro, the three DJs leave the villa grounds and set off to Brazil with the elephant, which is now pink.

reception

criticism

The Hum received mostly positive reviews. On the one hand, the change of title and the low recognition value of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were criticized, but there were already numerous positive criticism when the first previews were published and the live performances were also praised. Tim Tabens of the music website " Dance Charts " also gave the song a positive review and wrote:

“The Hum” is a typical big room blast that lacks nothing. The special thing about the number is the melody, which is introduced by a male voice. The drop sounds very much like Ummet Ozcan's style. An absolute festival track! From now on, The Hum will probably freak out every club and festival. All big room fans get their money's worth here. Really strong number! "

Commercial win

After the song was released on April 20, 2015, it only took 24 hours to advance to number 8 on the Beatport charts. Two days later it was at the top of the top 100. The track was also a success in the iTunes charts in several European countries. Despite strong download sales, the song did not reach a single chart position in Germany. In Belgium, on the other hand, The Hum was Dimitri Vegas', Like Mikes and Ummet Ozcan's first number one hit, although this only applies to Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. In comparison, it only moved up to 18th place in Wallonia. The trio also reached the official single charts in France.
