Greenville is a city in Madison County in the US state of Florida with 843 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Greenville is about 20 km west of Madison and about 60 km east of Tallahassee .
history
The railroad age began in Greenville in 1861 when the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad completed a rail line from Tallahassee to Lake City . In 1901 the South Georgia Railroad built a railway line between Quitman , Georgia and Greenville and extended it to Perry in 1904 .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 843 inhabitants were distributed over 403 households. The population density was 247.9 inh / km². 26.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 70.7% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.1% as Asian Americans . 0.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.9% to several ethnic groups. 1.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 35.0% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 25.2% of all households. 65.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.53 people and the average family size was 3.21 people.
30.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 45.6% of the population were male and 54.4% were female.
The median annual income was $ 18,750, with 40.5% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100% of the population.

Greenville is crossed by US Highways 90 ( SR 10 ) and 221 . Today the Georgia and Florida Railway operates freight services on the route from Perry via Greenville to Adel , Georgia, and CSX operates freight services on the west-east route between Tallahassee and Jacksonville . The nearest airports are in Georgia located Valdosta Regional Airport (60 km northeast) and the Tallahassee International Airport (80 km west).
